What Should You Bring to a Horseback Riding Excursion?
The operator will provide a riding helmet. Apart of this some operators also offer boots and snacks. Find out here what else you should have with you:
- Firm, closed shoes: If you do not get riding boots from the operator, you may only ride with firm and closed shoes, like trainers. Flip flops or sandals are not allowed.
- Sportswear: Put on something comfortable. However, they shouldn’t be your best clothes, as they get dusted by the horse and also during the ride.
- Jackets: In the winter season, it can get a little chilly at times, especially when riding during sunset. To be safe, take thin jackets with you.
- Eating and drinking: If the price of the excursion does not include meals, bringing a few snacks and plenty of drinking water is highly recommended.
- Sunscreen with high SPF: On some routes there is little or no shade-providing vegetation. It is therefore important that you apply sufficient sunscreen.
Camel Rides Fuerteventura
Most people know the long caravans of camels from movies and pictures. In fact, camels have been and are still being used as a means of transportation for thousands of years. They are strong, persistent and can store so much water in their humps that they can do without drinking for up to 10 days. At the same time, they are also very popular among holidaymakers so that safaris with camels are also offered in Fuerteventura. You will not sit back on the camel as you would with a horse. Racks are strapped onto the humps, and up to three guests can sit on their seats. No riding experience is required for riding camels in Fuerteventura.
Where Can You Go Camel Riding in Fuerteventura?

The Oasis Park, which can be found between Tarajalejo and Costa Calma in La Lajita, claims to keep the largest population of camels in Europe with around 450 animals. The dromedaries have enough space on the 20,000 square meter site of the camel reserve. The huge number ensures that the camels do not have to “work” every day and thus have enough time for their normal camel life. The camel safari in Oasis Park takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You will be led through the Oasis Park past the camel reserve on two different routes, the botanical garden and an artificially created African savannah. On the somewhat longer route, the dromedaries take you up a mountain to the Mirador del Jardín. From here you have a breathtaking view over the park and to Jandía Playa. The camel safari costs extra (€ 12 adults / € 8 children – as of 2019) and is available only to visitors of the Oasis Park who have already paid the entrance fee (€ 35 adults / € 20.50 children – as of 2019).
What Is the Difference Between Camels and Dromedaries?

If you do not know immediately whether it is a camel or dromedary, you will be helped quickly. Because with “camel” you are always right. All one and two-humped species belong to the genus of camels. These two-toed ungulates and are then divided into the subspecies Bactrian camels and Dromedary. Here’s the answer to the riddle: Bactrian camels come from Asia and have two bumps. And the African dromedaries are those with only one hump. Bactrian animals grow taller and are heavier than their relatives. They reach a shoulder height of up to 2.3 meters and a weight of up to 1,000 kilograms. The dromedaries look a bit more delicate and reach a maximum shoulder height of around 2 meters and a maximum weight of up to 540 kilograms.
