Esquinzo & Jandía Excursions and Sights
Due to its weather and the endless beaches Jandía Playa, as the place is also known, has turned into one of Fuerteventura's main tourist centers since the 1960s. Hundreds of thousands spend their holidays there every year. Most of them are from Germany. Among the most outstanding sights in Jandía town there are the beaches. However, these are not the only ones even though the place has grown artificially and has no historic center. On holiday there are a lot of things to do in and from Jandía, either on your own or organized by operators.
The term Jandía has two meanings on Fuerteventura. On the one hand, it refers to the entire southern tip of the island as the Jandía peninsula and on the other, Jandía is the tourist destination that stretches along the southwest coast. The southernmost district of Jandía town is Solana Matorral. Further north is Piedras Caídas and then Esquinzo. In Esquinzo there are some sights and excursions that you can make during your stay. What makes Jandía in the south of Fuerteventura such a special holiday destination, what to do there and to see, can be found in this detailed article.

Things to see in Jandía
The entire southern part of Fuerteventura is called Península de Jandía. The peninsula is separated from the rest of the island by the isthmus “Istmo de La Pared” of only 5 kilometers width. In addition to the tourist area in the southwest on the peninsula, there is also the Jandía Natural Park with its mighty elevations. Among them is the highest mountain of the island, the Pico de la Zarza (807 meters). The mountains ensure that the tourist resorts in the southwest are largely protected from clouds and cold air. More information about the Jandía Natural Park can be found here.
The Whale Skeleton of Jandía
Few people will ever meet a sperm whale face to face. You can get an idea of what to expect, on a meadow facing the beach in the district Solana Matorral. The nearly 15-meter-long skeleton of a sperm whale that used to weigh more than 16 tons, washed ashore in Fuerteventura in 2004, will definitely amaze you.
The salt marshes of Jandía
The salt marshes “Humedal Saladar de Jandía” are a unique and very sensitive ecosystem, which as a biosphere reserve is part of the nature reserve of Fuerteventura. Rare bird species from North Africa and Europe have their nesting sites here. In addition, special plants grow here that feed on the salt water of the sea. You will find the salt marshes on the beach Playa del Matorral and may also meet marabous, cranes or chipmunks there.
Playa de Esquinzo Attractions
Esquinzo is a completely new tourist destination, where bathing pleasure and relaxation are in the foreground. For this reason Esquinzo has no own attractions in the classical sense. But it is a central point in the south, from which you can quickly and easily reach the sights of the other regions.
Shopping in Jandía
The shopping center “Centro Comercial Cosmo” in Jandía is considered a paradise for shopping lovers. It is located just off the main street, Avenida del Saladar, at the southern end of the town and tempts visitors on four floors to spend a fortune shopping. The surfing bar “Surf Inn” is very popular apart to cocktails and drinks they are showing surf videos that create a relaxed atmosphere. After midnight, many are drawn to the Noche Tropical. Here you will dance and celebrate to Latin American rhythms until dawn.
