Discover the North of Fuerteventura
Unlike the almost circular island of Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura is shaped more like a banana and has a north-south extension of about 95 kilometers linear distance. Therefore, life and tourism on the holiday island are divided into three parts: north, center and south. The north is, so to speak, the bridge to the neighboring island of Lanzarote. A large number of ferries to Playa Blanca start daily from the port of Corralejo. And Corralejo itself is a vibrant city.
The best known sight in the north of Fuerteventura are the dunes in the Parque Natural de Corralejo. But there are other attractions that you should visit too. Quite mountain villages, such as Lajares or La Oliva, and the more lively surfer’s paradise El Cotillo should definitely also be on your list. If you have booked your holiday in the north of the island, you will also focus more on this region during your stay. What there is to see and to experience, you will find out in this article.

Selection of Excursions in the North of Fuerteventura
If you are staying in the north of Fuerteventura and would like to book a trip, make sure that the operator will pick you up at your hotel and bring you back again. Due to the size of the island, operators from the southern part do not offer transfers for the center and the north of the island and vice versa for cost reasons. Our website considers this tripartite division. The excursions are visually associated to the region, for which the operators offer hotel transfers. You simply have to click on your region on the island map and will automatically be directed to the excursions of the respective part. Under “Services & Prices” of the detailed descriptions of the excursions you will find the exact locations from which the transfer is provided.
Things to See in the North of Fuerteventura
There are many interesting places to explore in this part of the island. These 3 sights must not be missing from any list:
This small and historically interesting place is located almost in the middle between the east and the west coast. In the 17th century, members of the Spanish military leadership built a stately headquarter here. The Casa de los Coroneles is built in typical Spanish colonial style. Today it houses a museum and a historical archive. The Casa Mane cultural center hosts temporary exhibitions of talented Canarian artists. Noteworthy is the three-nave parish church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. Its huge bell tower is not centered but built on the left extreme.
At the foot of the nearly 400-meter-high Montaña de Tindaya, which the indigenous people have venerated as a sacred mountain, there is the town Tindaya. Its inhabitants are now dedicated to the production and sale of goat cheese. A stop in this quite place is well worth it, because you can try all kinds of local treats in the bars and restaurants.
Villaverde not only houses the oldest cave on the island but also something scary. The Cueva del Llano is about 600 meters long and measures between seven and ten meters in diameter. From the information center there are regular guided tours of the cave. Inside, you may encounter some very special spiders that only exist in this cave, the maiorerus randoi. They have no eyes because they are adapted to life in complete darkness.
